“Alcohol is holding you back.” This week I am joined by Ruari Fairbairns—a former oil broker from London who after a falling out with booze, decided it was time to put the plug in the jug. The benefits were so profound that he later walked away from his career in finance to become a full-time advocate for an alcohol-free lifestyle. In this episode, we delve into the gradual transformation of society’s relationship with alcohol, dissecting the negative repercussions on both mind and body. We explore the need for heightened awareness around alcohol, challenging the traditional narrative and embracing a healthier relationship with it. Ruari guides us through compelling discussions on stress, trauma, ADHD, emotional sobriety, and the pivotal role of community in the transformative journey. In essence, alcohol works until it doesn’t. Recognizing it for what it is—a neurotoxin—we challenge the nefarious societal structures that keep people stuck in patterns that don’t serve them, fostering fear of ostracization from their in-group or community. Ruari’s message provides a welcome mat for millions dealing with alcohol-related concerns. One Year No Beer is on a mission to create better lives by capturing and redressing these issues. Ruari’s work is not just commendable—it’s beautiful. As we welcome the New Year and the possibilities it presents, I offer this conversation as an encouragement to consider the many ways in which alcohol continues to interfere with your health, hopes, and dreams. Episode 805.  ✌🏼🌱 - Rich

Struggling to Say ‘No’? Let’s Talk Boundaries. If you often find yourself saying yes when you really mean no… you might be stuck in the cycle of people-pleasing. And the way out? Setting healthy boundaries. Boundaries define how others treat us: at work, in relationships, with friends, and beyond. Without them, we end up prioritising everyone else’s needs at the expense of our own well-being. But here’s the truth: you can’t show up fully for others if you’re constantly running on empty. At OYNB, we see this all the time. Our Complete Control program helps members break free from people-pleasing patterns, reshape their relationships, and build the confidence to set boundaries without guilt. Because ultimately, boundaries aren’t selfish, they’re a form of self-respect. Take a moment to reflect: 👉 Where in your life do you need stronger boundaries? 👉 Are you content with your current situation, or does something need to change? If this resonates, we’ve put together a short video diving deeper into this topic—watch it here: https://lnkd.in/dehQujrt Let us know what you think, and if you find it helpful, hit subscribe for more! Embrace your boundaries. Own your “No.”

The Ego: Your Protector or Your Prison? When we hear the word ego, we often think of arrogance, flashy success, or self-importance. But that’s not the full picture. The ego’s real job isn’t about status it’s about protection. It develops from our early experiences, working to keep us safe from emotional pain. But in doing so, it can create patterns that hold us back. Ever turned down an opportunity because it felt too risky? Talked yourself out of making a big life change? That’s your ego stepping in, not to sabotage you, but to shield you from discomfort. The problem? Growth and transformation require discomfort. If we always listen to our ego’s fears, we stay stuck. The good news? You can challenge it. At OYNB, we’ve seen this play out time and time again in our Complete Control program helping members break free from the limiting patterns their ego has built. Through powerful 1-2-1 coaching, we guide people to step beyond fear, rewrite their narratives, and unlock their full potential. Because the real you, the one capable of change, success, and true happiness, is waiting. Uncover more about the Ego with CEO, Jen: https://lnkd.in/dxxHRU6V

We all know sleep is important. But how often do we actually prioritise it? After a solid night’s rest, the whole world feels brighter. Your mind is sharper, your mood improves, and you feel ready to take on the day. But after a bad night? You’re groggy, irritable, unfocused and everything feels harder than it should. There’s a reason sleep deprivation is used as a torture device! Sleep isn’t just about rest, it’s when your brain consolidates memories, repairs your body, and prepares you for what’s ahead. If you want to perform at your best, sleep has to be a non-negotiable. So how can you improve it? Here are three simple steps: 🛏 Stick to a sleep schedule – Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day (yes, even weekends). 📖 Create a bedtime routine – Read, do some breathwork, or stretch—anything that relaxes you. 📱 Reduce screen exposure – Blue light messes with your sleep cycle. Try switching off devices at least an hour before bed. If you’re still struggling, try tracking your sleep. A simple journal can help, but sleep apps or wearables provide deeper insights by measuring heart rate, temperature, and breathing patterns. Better sleep = better performance, mood, and health. Try these tips and see what happens! What’s your go-to sleep hack? 👇

The trauma you bury, your body remembers. Unfelt emotions don’t just disappear. They linger, stored in your body, showing up in ways you might not even realise—chronic stress, fatigue, anxiety, physical pain, or burnout. When we push emotions down instead of processing them, our bodies pick up the burden. For many high performers, leaders, and professionals, powering through is the default. We tell ourselves we don’t have time to slow down, to feel, to heal. But ignoring what’s beneath the surface doesn’t make it go away it just resurfaces later, often in ways that disrupt our health, relationships, and work. Healing starts when we allow ourselves: 👉 To feel. 👉 To process. 👉 To release. That might mean talking about what’s been suppressed, seeking support, or making lifestyle changes that prioritise emotional well-being. Whatever it looks like for you, know this: True resilience isn’t about avoiding pain, it’s about facing it with the courage to heal. Focus on taking a moment to check in on yourself today.

Ethanol, the type of alcohol we drink, also happens to be a powerful disinfectant. It’s used to clean wounds, sterilise surfaces, and kill bacteria and viruses. A 70% ethanol solution is strong enough to break down cell membranes and proteins, stopping infections in their tracks. 🤔 Now, take a moment to consider… if it’s that strong, what is it doing inside our bodies when we drink it to celebrate, commiserate, relax, or manage stress? The Impact of Alcohol on the Body: 📉 Brain Function: Ethanol disrupts neural pathways, affecting mood, memory, and decision-making. Chronic use increases the risk of anxiety and depression. ❤️ Liver & Organs: Your liver works hard to break down alcohol, but excessive consumption leads to fatty liver, inflammation, and long-term damage. 💊 Cancer Risk: Alcohol is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, liver, and breast. So, What’s the Alternative? The good news? You don’t need alcohol to relax, socialise, or de-stress. Here are some powerful alternatives: ✅ Movement: Exercise releases endorphins, the body’s natural stress relievers. ✅ Mindfulness & Breathwork: A few deep breaths or meditation can help you reset without the side effects. ✅ Social Connection: Find joy in alcohol-free gatherings, laughter and great conversation don’t require a drink. ✅ Better Sleep: Cutting alcohol improves sleep quality, leaving you more energised and focused. Rethinking your relationship with alcohol isn’t about restriction, it’s about freedom and better choices for your mind and body. 💡 Would you ever swap alcohol for something healthier?
